The
following is taken directly from Psalm 35. As a prayer for our nation
the first person singulars have been changed to third person plurals
to refer to us as a nation.
O
Lord, oppose those who oppose us. Declare war on those who are attacking
us. Put on your armor, and take up your shield. Prepare for battle, and
come to our aid. Lift up your spear and javelin and block the way of our
enemies. Let us hear you say, "I am your salvation!"
Humiliate
and disgrace those trying to kill us, turn them back in confusion. Blow
them away like chaff in the wind--a wind sent by the angel of the Lord.
Make their path dark and slippery, with the angel of the Lord pursuing
them. Although we did them no wrong, the laid a trap for us. Although
we did them no wrong, they dug a pit for us. So let sudden ruin overtake
them! Let them be caught in the snare they set for us! Let them fall to
destruction in the pit they dug for us. Then we will rejoice in the Lord.
We will be glad because he rescues us. We will praise him from the bottom
of our heart. Lord, who can compare to you?
...But
they are glad now that we are in trouble, they gleefully join together
against us. We are attacked by people we don't even know; they hurl slander
at us continually. They mock us with the worst kind of profanity, and
they snarl at us. How long, O Lord, will you look on and do nothing? Rescue
us from their fierce attacks. Protect our lives from these lions! Then
we will thank you in front of the entire world. We will praise you before
all the people. Don't let our treacherous enemies rejoice over our defeat.
Don't let those who hate us without cause gloat over our sorrow. They
talk peace; they plot against innocent people who are minding their own
business.
O
Lord, you know all about this. Do not stay silent. Don't abandon us now,
O Lord. Wake up! Rise to our defense! Take up our case, our God and our
Lord. Declare us "not guilty" O Lord our God, for you give justice.
Don't let our enemies laugh about us in our troubles. Don't let them say,
"Look! We have what we wanted! Now we will eat them alive!"
May those who rejoice at our troubles be humiliated and disgraced. May
those who triumph over us be covered with shame and dishonor.
But
give great joy to those who have stood with us in our defense, Let them
continually say, "Great is the Lord, who enjoys helping his servant."
The we will tell everyone of your justice and goodness, and we will praise
you all day long.
