Ephesians 1

Discussion Questions:

1. Who wrote the book of Ephesians? How is that this person is an "Apostle?"

2. To whom was the letter written? What does it mean to be a saint? To whom are they faithful?

3. What is unique about Ephesians 1:3-14? Why does Paul tell us all this?

4. What has God done for us? Is there a significance to the tense Paul is using? What does it express?

5. Based on verse 4, who did the choosing? (What does the middle voice tell us about the choice?) When did it happen? For what purpose?

6. What does the word "predestined" mean in verse 5? What are we predestined to be? Why does God predestine us?

7. Based on verse 6, again, who is responsible for this? What should be our response?

8. How does God accomplish all this?

9. How do we acquire our understanding of God and His will?

10. What period of time is verse 10 describing?

11. What fact does Paul repeat in verse 11? How do we know that God is sovereign?

12. What does Paul tell us happens to believers at the time of their salvation? What does that mean (Gk. sphragizo)? Notice the tense again.

13. Who gets the Holy Spirit? What is the purpose of the Spirit? What does that word "pledge" mean (Gk. arrhabon)? (Cf. 2 Cor. 1:22; 5:5). To whom do you belong?

PART II

1. Who wrote the book of Ephesians? How is that this person is an "Apostle?" To whom was the letter written?

2. When Paul says, "For this reason..." what is the reason?

3. What is the basis of Paul's excitement about the Ephesians? What has been and continues to be his prayer for them?

4. What two things does Paul want the Ephesians to have and why? (Verse 17)

5. What does Paul mean when he says he wants us to "know" God better?

6. What else does Paul pray for them? What three things does he also want them to know (literally "see" or "perceive")?

7. What power do we have working on our behalf? How great is it?

8. Verse 19-23 are a wonderful description of the glory and honor of Jesus. List the attributes and or powers given to him:

9. How should that makes us feel? List the past, present and future concepts embodied in this message.
