Lincoln Logs and God's Word
By Evan D. Baltz, B.S., M.Div
When I was a kid one of my favorite toys was a set of Lincoln Logs that I received for Christmas one year. You could do just about anything with these Lincoln Logs. Of course invariably, you ended up building a Log cabin out of them. It was fun. One problem though. The way the manufacturer packed them into the can was all nice and tidy. However once you had dumped them out on to the floor, they seemed to be in disarray and it was difficult to ever get them to all fit back into the can. This usually meant, for me, leaving the lid off and loosing pieces because I wasn't patient enough to take the time to put them back in an orderly fashion the way they were intended to be.

Such is the case with God's Word sometimes. There are times when we get into certain Scriptures of God's wonderful revelation to us, and as we look at them from our human perspective there doesn't seem any real way to get all the pieces to fit together. We might even point the finger of blame at the teacher or pastor for even getting the game out in the first place. But God's word, like Lincoln Logs, has a purpose. It's purpose is to teach us about the nature of God. Sometimes He is bigger than we think He is, and His Word conflicts with our earthly perception of just who The Almighty is. Rrather than take the time and have the patience to put all the pieces together, we choose to just leave some pieces out that we don't like or don't fit with our understanding. But all the pieces do fit. Not our way though, God's way.

I am always amazed though at the reaction that is caused by taking those pieces out and building a log cabin with them. That is what they are intended to make. A complete biblical picture of who God is. That is what the pieces are there for. But some will say, "I don't like what you have done." Why? All I have done is used the pieces to build what they were intended to build. Sometimes the most difficult thing for people to handle is the mere reading of the Word of God straight from the pages of the Bible. We may not like the Log cabin it builds, but we must accept what the Word of God teaches clearly.

My friends, God is sovereign and ordered. We are not, and it makes it difficult for us to understand God's nature. But God's Word is there to teach us and reveal to us a little bit about just who our wonderful Lord is. Let God's Word penetrate your heart, and watch the pieces come together!

"Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe." Hebrews 12:28
